Splash out this Spring

13.04.2011

With the clocks having just gone forward, it is about time we start preparing for summer and there’s no better way to get into the summer spirit than by getting into a swimming pool!

I know you’re thinking “This South African is lost!”... well, think again! People have been using the benefits of baths and swimming pools for centuries. Different types of hydrotherapy () have been recorded in ANCIENT Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations, why should we be any different?

There are numerous benefits of taking your training into the pool. Whether you’re bored with your current regime, have high blood pressure or are struggling with an injury you picked up training for the London marathon, you will find a fantastic solution in the water. Training sessions in the pool allow the body to work against the resistance of the water in a non-weight bearing manner, resulting in greater muscle activation and very little impact or stress on the joints. The non-weight bearing factor also means that exercise performed in the water can be done with greater ease and improved range of motion allowing individuals with musculoskeletal or metabolic disorders to continue an active lifestyle. Those rehabilitating injuries will benefit from the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the water which aids in the reduction of swelling, increases circulation and improves proprioception by providing added feedback.

Most importantly, by changing your exercise environment, you keep things fresh and fun, especially if you consider incorporating equipment such as pool noodles, foam dumbbells and kickboards. The possibilities are endless!

So whether its free style or resistance training you’re interested in, it’s time to test the water, take the plunge and start your journey to fitness this summer!
